About Mei Yim Low

It’s usually landscapes that fire my enthusiasm and make me rush for the camera or art materials. Dramatic skies, sunlight creating shapes and patterns on architecture, the warm colours of late afternoon sunlight, the first pinpoints of light at dusk.....
I take photographs and make watercolour sketches when possible. The sketches are precious notes simplifying and recording what exactly was fascinating about an often complex scene. They serve as a springboard for further paintings; some involving more experimentation with unpredictable paint runs and splatters, colour and gestural markmaking. Here, decisions rely partly on visual reference and partly on memory and intuition in an attempt to subtly suggest the features and mood of a place without stifling the abstract beauty of the spontaneous mark.
