My interest is the human face and figure. At college I worked from models, and life drawing is a passion I have sustained to this day. I now paint mainly from photographs, using this secondary and 2D resource as a mnemonic stimulus. For me creation is a purely intuitive process, during which the paint actually becomes the subject as an act of transubstantiation. Oil paint lends itself peculiarly to the depiction of flesh: plastic; translucent; an earthy spectrum; skeins of pigment emulate the layering of nerves, muscle, skin that constitute the body. As I work, it seems that I allow rather than execute the image i.e. that it exists already within the paint in the same way that a sculptor might 'see' a figure within a block of marble.
