About Nancy Hocking
Portrait sculpture and life drawing have been part of my life for decades. However I have recently chosen to put portraiture aside. I have one more in the pipeline nearly finished and it will be the last. I found I needed to lay the portraits aside to have time for what I call my Non-Topology. I began to make art inspired by Topological ideas about 7 years ago. There are many bizarre and fascinating concepts that present marvellous challenges to interpret visually. Topology is a branch of mathematics which investigates the properties of objects when stretched, knotted and placed in higher spacial dimension. It is sort of a rubberised geometry. Art and maths? Not so odd a marriage as at first you might think. I am not out on a limb and crazy. Some of my work appears in a 2020 Journal of Mathematics and Arts and also in the 2019 and 2020 Bridges Organization’s maths and art exhibition catalogues. I collaborate on art projects with topologist Professor Scott Carter. Some years back the Tate had a symposium called simply Topology. Art and Math are indeed happy bedfellows.
